A western country
prides itself around its privately owned media enterprises, it’s
‘freedom of speech’ and sees other countries practising state
owned media as ‘un-democratic’ or ‘having no freedom’ - this
can be no further from the truth.
Our freedom of speech
is in fact the words of a corrupt business man whose enterprises
intend to win over and manipulate public opinion. For example, in the
1980’s the Daily Mail reported an increase in black stabbings in
order to try and get the peoples' backing for changes to our
immigration control. The Sun 2002-onwards supported all efforts of
the US and UK government in their operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
2011 London riots are passed off as a result of ‘a sick pocket of
our society’ rather than investigating the real issue of social and
material deprivation and absolute poverty.
Widespread media
corporations separate themselves by swearing a false allegiance to a
political wing, The Sun although portrayed and thought of as a
‘Working man’s paper’ is nothing more than a puppet to the Tory
Party. The Guardian although seen as liberal/ left wing does no
justice to leftist politics as it numbs and dumbs down the
extremities of left wing, thus social democratic policies end up
being portrayed as socialism.
This reduction in left
wing politics, has led to people thinking that Social Democracy is
the equivalent of Socialist Policy.
So when a political
figure speaks out, for instance Ed Miliband, about anything remotely
to do with left wing politics it’s seen as extreme, then the media
plays it’s part by sustaining that belief; The Sun’s ‘Red Ed’
or ‘Red Baron’.
If you were to search
‘Ed Miliband is a communist’ you would receive 245,000 results
despite the fact Ed Miliband’s policies so far advocate Social
Democracy. The same was said of David Cameron, portrayed by the press
as being a more left wing Tory, however strange and impossible this
is, people still believed the rumours about this ‘hip new’ ‘down
to earth’ Tory.
The degree of
manipulation of western media breaks the boundaries, whereas in
publicly controlled media view and bias is largely tended towards the
people and government, private media seems to destroy any moral or
social objective, instead the press is led by rich individuals
seeking to increase their profit margin, in fact Rupert Murdoch owns
shares in: The Sun, News of the World (recently dissolved), The
Times, Sunday Times, BskyB, 20th Century Fox, Fox Network, Vogue
Magazine, Harper Collins Publishers and many more. Surely this mass
collection of media sectors is the kind of thing critics of Communism
sought out?
We live in a backwards
society, Communist Media is the Devil and Corporate Media is God.
This view is completely contradictory to the truth; of course there
are times when publicly owned media has been converted into a
suppressive state apparatus, but this is exactly what has happened in
the UK, USA, and France etc.
Media now serves the
purpose of keeping the people indoors out of the way of harm, showing
people how to live the perfect life or how to be the perfect
housewife. This fiercely patriarchal and capitalist system bogs down
any attempt to changing opinions and views, only one newspaper
remains open to public editing and opinion, The Morning Star. The
Star’s attempt to bring true democratic and ethical journalism has
resulted in it being the biggest nationwide Socialist paper. Indeed
it is the only paper known to me that allows people to publish their
thoughts and opinions without manipulation from a corporate editor.
The paper cares for the public and nurtures radical philosophy; it is
a safe ground for people who do not believe in an oppressive system.
It is a mother to those whose country has denied it proper coverage
of media.
