The Peoples Charter: New group in Torrington

As of February 2012 the Peoples Charter movement will be expanding into Torridge and West Devon. I shall be setting up a group for Torrington and the surrounding area (to also include the local college Petroc), in order to help promote awareness for alternative economics and the community.

So why did I decide to form a group?

Torridge and West Devon is one of the most deprived areas in the whole of the UK, among it’s deprivation it has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates, unemployment and lack of academic educational qualifications. Through a project like the Peoples Charter I shall be able to attract people across most of the political spectrum and those who are interested in helping develop the communities for the greater good.

What are the activities and goals of the group?

As well as trying to fulfil the 6 principles of the Peoples Charter, I want to try and inspire people to make a real difference and to help those whom help others. Helping the community workers: artists, tillers, writers, desk-workers, and musicians etc. who need support the most in difficult times. The removal of neo-liberal economics is a vital goal; only through education and observation of alternative schemes can we persuade people to fight for other economic strategies. Fighting the cuts to frontline public services is a must! Cuts have been affecting people from all backgrounds but especially those on low incomes, lodging or looking after children, the purpose of the group is not to help find alternatives after the cuts have been made but to fight the cuts first-hand and then propose additional support for these people. Planning fundraisers and public meetings will take the greatest level of importance for the activities of the group.

When does it all kick off?

Sometime in late January 2012 the meeting date shall be confirmed and everyone involved will be contacted. The purpose of the first meeting will be to help get a sense of everybody’s skills, interests and method of help. Every guest is invited to bring an argument to the table as well as bringing some examples of communal activities they feel will benefit the group.
